broth and breads

A boiling liquid was the beginning of our broth.  The root bhreue was to heat, boil, or bubble. It gives brew, bread as well as broil. While boil seems very close, it’s from beu meaning to swell. As that goes up through Latin then French, it gives other soupy words like bullion and the bouillabaisse.

The Latin for bread was panis, which the French use in their bread, pain. That also sits in the middle of companion, someone you break bread with. The root was pa which is the source for food itself along with pantry, a place where food is kept and antipasto, something served before the food.
